Using the Mobile Phone in China

China has the most mobile users in the world.  According to a recent Ministry of Information Industry study, China has over 600 million mobile users.  Therefore, it is an understatement to say cell phones have become an indispensable item.  As a foreigner who plans to stay in China for over 6 months, having a cell phone is a must as well.  However, getting and start using a cell phone in China is more than about purchasing a plan.  To successfully make a call with a mobile in China, you need to follow these simple steps:

Buying the Phone
1. Cell phones and plans are independent of each other.  Therefore, users have more freedom in selecting their cell phones.  Cell phones can be bought in electronic stores or mobile service centers.

Buying the Phone Card
2. Most of the cell phones in China use the SIM card, these SIM cards can be bought in most telecommunication service centers as well as in newsstands around the city.  Depending on what you like, you can pick your phone card accordingly.  Cell phone fees are usually charged based on the number of text messages, phone minutes, and other services you install.  Most of the time, you don’t need to sign any contract with the phone company; all you need to do is to regularly charge your phone with money.

Adding More Money
3. Cell phone fees are usually deducted before the 10th of each month, therefore, you’ll regularly need to add more money to your cell phone.  You can purchase varying denominations of recharging cards at service centers and easily add money to your phone using the provided toll free number.
